Ayurvedic treatment for hair loss: How Ayurveda helps in Hair Growth?
First of all, a question conjures in mind is “Does it really work?”
Hair loss is a common concern for everyone and reasons are many for your hair may fall out, from genetics and vitamin deficiencies to hormone changes. Some medical conditions like thyroid disease, may also cause hair to thin or fall out. There’s nothing like magical for growing hair, but researches have been shown that there are some ayurvedic herbs that may slow hair loss or helps to promote new growth. There are many herbal remedies that may be used to help improve hair growth.
Herbal hair oils:
Also known as hair tonics made of an herbal extract mixed in a carrier oil base. Some hair oils include multiple herbs and carrier oils while others are used simply. Coconut oil, sweet almond oil, walnut oil, olive oil, mineral oil, jojoba oil, and wheat germ oil are some of the most popular base oils used to make herbal oils.
How to use it?
Some hair oils are devised to use as a shampoo or a leave-in overnight as an ayurvedic hair treatment. Thus it is best to take note of the manufacturer’s instructions. The product label will advise you on whether to apply to damp or dry hair. Using clean hands massage the hair oil directly to your scalp and then rinse as instructed.
Herbal creams:
Made from herb-infused oils and water, Herbal creams contain less oil and more water than herbal ointments to let it absorbed by your skin. Some herbs like Giant dodder (Cuscuta reflexa Roxb), False Daisy (Eclipta alba), Bitter apple (Citrullus colocynthis), Night-flowering jasmine (Nyctanthes arbortristis) are used to make herbal creams.
How to use it?
With clean hands to massage the hair cream on the scalp or apply to hair from roots to tips as per manufacturer’s instructions.
Herbal gels
Herbal gels contain herbal extracts in a gel base that usually do not contain oil. Herbs used in herbal gels support healthy hair growth and include Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) and Marking nut (Semecarpus Anacardium).
How to use it?
Massage your scalp by clean hands with a gel or apply to your hair from roots to tips as per manufacturer’s instructions.
Possible side effects and risks: The main risk of herbal hair growth products is an allergic reaction. You must check the product for an allergic reaction on your scalp or not. Following steps will help you to make a product check:
- Take and apply a small amount of product to the inside of your wrist.
- Leave it for at least 24 hours.
- If you haven’t experienced any irritation within a day, it should be safe to apply elsewhere.
If you feel like an allergic reaction to your scalp by experiencing rash, hives, redness, itching, difficulty breathing, dizziness, and headache, then you must avoid its usage. Possible side effects of topical herbal hair growth products include thinning hair, increased hair loss, dry scalp, scalp redness or irritation. There’s not enough information to standardize dosing recommendations suggested by experts. Pregnant or breastfeeding women shouldn’t use herbs to grow hair unless under the supervision of a doctor or a qualified ayurvedic practitioner.
No herbal remedy can re-grow a full head of hair. You should be wary of herbal products that claim to be a hair growth sensation. Research has shown that there are some herbs that may help in strengthening hair, support scalp health, improve hair thickness, or stimulate the hair growth cycle. Still, more clinical trials on humans are needed before trying any herbal remedies as it may become a mainstream hair growth treatment in Ayurveda.
